It is one of the oldest preserved theatres in Europe. The venue has been used in various ways, being an open-air theater in the 17th century, coliseum from 1769, ''teatro romántico'' in the 19th century, and a cinema in the early 20th century. These variations in use led to major changes in the building's architecture. Built in 1601-02 and designed to mirror the Corral de la Cruz, the architect was Francisco Sánchez.
